What is Alexander Technique ?
Alexander Technique is a practical method of self-help, developed by F M Alexander. The technique is learned as a process to help improve your health and well-being.
It can help you prevent and alleviate conditions associated with stress, tension and poor posture, particularly muscle, joint and back pains. The Technique can also aid rehabilitation after illness, injury or surgery and provide coping skills for chronic conditions.
Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869 -1955)
F M Alexander was an actor who suffered from vocal problems which interfered with his work. Because of this, he spent several years researching these problems, and what the underlying cause was - observing himself when reciting. He discovered that in certain situations he had habitual reactions where which he tensed his neck, which directly affected his voice.
Alexander gradually realised that the relationship and use of our head, neck and back acts as the 'primary control' of our whole body. Most children move freely and fluidly but because we 'translate everything, whether physical or mental or spiritual, into muscular tension' we gradually develop unconscious habits of 'mis-use'. These habits interfere with the fine tuning of the body's primary control, resulting in a general loss of poise and vitality, plus disorders such as backache, repetitive strain injury (RSI) and headaches. Alexander's first pupils began to report that not only were vocal problems improving but other aches and pains were also vanishing, so Alexander began to develop the Technique that we know now, for the whole body-mind organism
How it Works
The Alexander Technique works by helping you to identify and prevent the harmful postural habits that aggravate, or may be the cause of, stress, pain and under-performance.
The Technique teaches you how to release tension and rediscover balance of mind and body. With increased awareness you can:
- be poised without stiffness
- move gracefully and powerfully with less effort
- be alert and focused with less strain
- breathe and speak more easily and freely
- be calm and confident
